We can all immediately hear the differences between a quartet by Mozart and one by Shostakovich, or between a sonata by Brahms and one by Debussy. But what are we really hearing when we hear these differences? What does "style" mean in music, and what is the significance of personal styles and period styles (Classical, Romantic, modern), and of the differences among styles?
