"Taking Liberties: Can Classicism and Innovation Co-Exist in the 21st Century?"
*at Bellevue Arts MuseumClassical music is a 300-year tradition which has managed to transcend the hypercommercialization of pop culture. A Beethoven symphony sounds as potent today as it did to its contemporaries. But it can only do so to whomever is willing to really listen. Making an art-form mostly based on the creations of dead-white-western composers relevant to a 21st century audience has become the rallying credo of most music organizations around the world. "Taking Liberties" is a necessity in presenting the classics, and in the right creative hands, the daring approach has done wonders in attracting broader and younger audiences. Can classical music remain true to its timeless essence while re-inventing itself as modern-day entertainment?
