Légende for Trumpet and Piano
Enescu wrote Legende for students to perform in a competition. It shows off the complete range of the trumpet with long, almost string-like passages, contrasted with the virtuosic sections.
Im Nebel (In the Fog)
Inspired by Hesse’s poem of the same name, Hosakawa won the NHK Symphony Otaka Award for Im Nebel. Jeroen Berwaerts premiered the work in 2013.
Märchenerzählungen for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, Op. 132
Schumann’s Fairy Tales leave it up to the performers and audience to fill in the details of this whimsical story since he gives no specifics about the particular tales.
String Quartet in G minor, Op. 20 No. 3
This set of six quartets by Haydn was the first that gave all four instruments their own equal voices, leading to his nickname as the “father of the string quartet.”
Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in E minor, Op. 67
Shostakovich wrote the final three movements after the death of a close friend. Coupled with the tragedy of the early to mid-1940s, this piece was banned almost immediately from being heard for it’s overwhelming elegiac manner.
