Anton Nel, winner of the 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition at Carnegie Hall, continues to tour internationally as concerto soloist, recitalist, chamber musician and teacher. Highlights this coming season include performances with orchestra, chamber music, and recitals in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto and Dallas. Increasingly in demand as a teacher, he gives an annual series of masterclasses at the Manhattan School of Music as Visiting Professor. Last May he traveled to China for the first time to perform and teach at the Sichuan International Piano Festival in Chengdu, followed by his annual residencies at the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Steans Music Institute at the Ravinia Festival. A Johannesburg native, Mr. Nel was a student of Adolph Hallis at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and pursued graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati, where he was a student of Bela Siki and Frank Weinstock. He is currently the holder of the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Endowed Chair in Piano, and the Head of the Division of Keyboard Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He has been a regular performer at SCMS since 1989.
