Cynthia Phelps is the New York Philharmonic's principal violist. Recent highlights of her solo appearances with the orchestra have included the premiere of Unearth, Release, a viola concerto by Julia Adolphe, Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in both 2010 and 2014, and featured performances on tour in Europe at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Vienna's Musikverein, Salle de Pleyel in Paris, the Barbican Centre in London, and both Carnegie and David Geffen Hall. Other solo engagements have included the Minnesota Orchestra, Sinfonica de Bilbao, the Shanghai Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic and Rochester Philharmonic, and the San Diego Symphony. Ms. Phelps is a member of the New York Philharmonic String Quartet and performs with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Jupiter Chamber Players, and the festivals of Santa Fe, La Jolla, Chamber Music Northwest, Bravo! Vail, and Bridgehampton. Her honors include First Prize in both the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and the Washington National Competition. Winner of the Pro Musicis International Award, Ms. Phelps's most recent recording, Air for flute, harp and viola, was nominated for a GRAMMY Award. Ms. Phelps is currently on the faculty at The Juilliard School in New York City.
