Joan DerHovsepian Viola

Present

Violist Joan DerHovsepian holds the Associate Principal chair of the Houston Symphony and currently serves as Acting Principal. Solo appearances with the orchestra in 2022 include Mozart Sinfonia Concertante led by Jane Glover and Bruch Double Concerto under music director Andrés Orozco-Estrada. A dedicated teacher, Ms. DerHovsepian is an Artist Teacher of Viola at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music with instruction in viola orchestral repertoire and chamber music, and is a regular guest faculty with the New World Symphony. Recent summer festival appearances include the Mimir Chamber Music Festival in Ft. Worth, Texas and Melbourne Australia, the Mainly Mozart Festival, the Lake Lure Chamber Music Festival, the Peninsula Music Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and as faculty with the National Orchestral Institute in Washington, DC. Ms. DerHovsepian was the second prize recipient of the William Primrose Viola Competition. She was violist of the Everest Quartet, top prize winners at the Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. Her primary teachers include Kim Kashkashian and James Dunham.
