SCMS Debut: 2013 Winter Festival
In the last season Karen made her subscription debut with the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, National Orchestra of Spain in Madrid, and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. She made returns to the LA Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel at the Hollywood Bowl, as well as the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris under Mikko Franck, and WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne under Cristian Macelaru. A passionate chamber musician, she has collaborated with James Ehnes, Inon Barnatan, Jeremy Denk, Leif Ove Andsnes, Emmanuel Pahud, Lawrence Power, Alisa Weilerstein, Tine Thing Helseth, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, and the late Heinrich Schiff. Strongly committed to contemporary works, Karen world-premiered Samuel Adams’ Chamber Concerto, written for her, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Karen also gave the North American premiere of Matthias Pintscher’s Concerto No. 2 “Mar’eh” with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington DC with the composer conducting. Most recently, she performed Elizabeth Ogonek’s “In Silence” with the Detroit Symphony. Karen is an avid performer of Astor Piazzolla’s Nuevo Tango, having worked with legendary tango pianist Pablo Ziegler and bandoneonists Hector Del Curto and JP Jofre. For the occasion of Piazzolla’s 100th anniversary in 2021, Karen released ‘A Piazzolla Triology’ on BIS Records, with the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and guitarist Stephanie Jones. It follows Karen’s previous project with BIS, works by Paganini and his baroque predecessors, recorded with Finnish guitarist Ismo Eskelinen.
