Ben Hausmann is Associate Principal Oboe of the Seattle Symphony. He has previously held the position of tenured Principal Oboe with the Seattle Symphony, l’Orchestre symphonique de Quebéc, the Hollywod Bowl Orchestra and Savannah Symphony. He has also appeared as guest Principal Oboe with the San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony and been a frequent guest of the Metropolitan Opera.
Hausmann’s summer festivals include the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Aspen Music Festival, where his performance of Richard Strauss’ Oboe Concerto from memory was broadcast on NPR. Notably, he jogged 21 miles uphill to the highest paved pass in the United States to prepare his concerto performance with Aspen Music Festival Sinfonia from memory.
Hausmann studied oboe with Elaine Douvas at The Juilliard School, where he received his MM degree, and with Richard Woodhams at the Aspen Music Festival. He has also studied gouging-machines with John Ferrillo.
He was Adjunct Professor of Oboe at the University of Washington and has taught music theory and oboe at Juilliard. Additional past teaching posts include adjunct professor at Armstrong Atlantic State University and Georgia Southern University, as well as a guest private and master class teacher at Juilliard Pre-College.
An avid composer, Hausmann has had his orchestral compositions performed and recorded by the Seattle Symphony and Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra. His compositions for oboe have been performed in North America, Europe and Africa. Also an active pianist, he has served as the keyboardist of the Hilton Head Orchestra and faculty recital accompanist at Georgia Southern University.
Hausmann has also performed solo recitals as pianist and composer for the Seattle Chamber Music Society and Aspen Music Festival. He also sings as an honorary member in the Seattle Symphony Chorale.
