Sonata for Cello and Piano in A minor, D. 821 "Arpeggione"
This work for arpeggione, a type of bowed instrument similar to a guitar and a medieval fiddle, is the only substantial composition for the instrument. It is now typically played on the cello with piano.
String Quintet in B-flat Major, Op. 87
This later string quintet by Mendelssohn is in many ways a showpiece for the first violinist, particularly in the outer movements, where the remaining strings act as an accompaniment.
