Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde (transcribed by Franz Liszt)

Isolde’s dramatic death at the end of Wagner’s opera was a revolutionary moment in opera as he pushed tonal harmony to the limits. Liszt’s piano arrangement captures the range of sound in a whole orchestra, as well as the drama inherent in the original work.

Sonatine for Flute and Piano

The earliest surviving work of Boulez, the Sonatine shows off both the technical and interpretive skills of both musicians with music that is full of forward motion, propelling the audience to the finale.

Quintet for Piano and Strings in F minor

The first movement of Respighi’s Piano Quintet has an assured late Romantic style filled with beautiful melodies and a mastery of orchestration, which he learned studying with Rimsky-Korsakov.

Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in B-flat Major, Op. 99, D. 898

Wanting simple works for piano or songs, the publisher offered Schubert only a quarter of the typical going rate for this piano trio; Schubert, in desperate financial need, took the deal, while still creating a lyrical masterpiece.
