Cellist Astrid Schween joined the Juilliard String Quartet in September 2016, also joining the Juilliard cello faculty. Astrid made her debut as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Zubin Mehta. A longtime member of the Lark Quartet, Astrid performed around the world, recorded numerous CDs and received many honors, including the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Gold Medal at Russia's Shostakovich Competition. A frequent guest artist with the Boston Chamber Music Society, Astrid is the current cellist of the Boston Trio and performs in recital with celebrated pianist Michael Gurt. Schween was recently featured in Strings and Strad magazines, and was a featured guest speaker at the Library of Congress on the role of women in music. She received her degrees from The Juilliard School; her teachers included Harvey Shapiro, Leonard Rose, Bernard Greenhouse, and Jacqueline Du Pré.
