Andrés Díaz //
Cello
Andrés Díaz won First Prize in the 1986 Naumburg International Cello Competition and the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1998. He has appeared with the symphony orchestras of Seattle, Chicago and the National Symphony Orchestra, among others. Mr. Díaz has performed in recital and with orchestras in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Canada, Chile, Venezuela, Argentina, Russia and New Zealand. He has toured extensively with the Díaz String Trio featuring violinist Andrés Cárdenes and his brother violist Roberto Díaz. A proponent of new work, Mr. Díaz has premiered works by Gunther Schuller, Frank Bridge and Leon Kirchner. He has several recordings, including a recording of the Villa-Lobos Cello Concerto No. 2 with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, a recording featuring works of Martinu, Lutosławski, and Rachmaninoff, and a recording of the six Bach Cello Suites. Chamber music festival appearances include Santa Fe, La Jolla, Marlboro, Ravinia, Bravo! Colorado, Spoleto, Saratoga, and Tanglewood festivals. Born in Santiago, Chile, Mr. Díaz began his studies at the age of five and subsequently studied at the Georgia Academy of Music in Atlanta. A graduate of the New England Conservatory, Mr. Díaz is currently Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He plays a 1698 Matteo Goffriller cello with a bow made by his father, Manuel Díaz.
