"Educate Your Ear" Adult Lectures
Czech Mates: A Rich and Varied Musical Tradition July 10
Long dominated by its German neighbors, the residents of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) were likened by the late 18th-century music chronicler Charles Burney as "the most musical people of Germany, perhaps even of Europe." His assessment, of course, was made without intended irony. If we include Moravia and Slovakia, composers of that region had a major impact on the great musical heritage of Europe. Join us as we explore the works of Czech composers such as Dvořák, Janáček, Smetana, and Novák, featured during the Summer Festival at The Overlake School.
