Outreach

Education and community outreach is an important part of SCMS's mission for building sustainable audiences and preserving chamber music for future generations. Throughout the year, SCMS provides opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience the joys of chamber music with entertaining, educational and accessible programs. These programs are free of charge or a nominal cost.

Family Concerts, as part of both our Winter Festival and Summer Festivals programming, introduce children 5 years and older to chamber music in an educational and entertaining format that is fun for the whole family.

Music Lectures and Demonstrations help middle school music students enhance their performance skills and encourage their continued musical training through intimate visits by professional musicians.

Open Rehearsals encourage middle and high school music students and their teachers to observe professional musicians practicing in preparation for a concert.

"Educate Your Ear" presents a series of stimulating lectures each Spring and Summer by regional experts, designed to inform and delight listeners of all levels and backgrounds.

Pre-concert Recitals feature the talents of one or two festival musicians in solo repertoire, and include informal commentary on the music performed. These 30-minute recitals precede each of the main concerts during our Winter Festival and both Summer Festivals.

Music Under the Stars free outdoor seating program broadcasts each of the main concerts and pre-concert recitals for the Summer Festival at both Lakeside School and The Overlake School. Especially popular with families.

Classical KING FM 98.1 Radio broadcasts live all 17 Summer Festival main series concerts and re-broadcasts Summer Festival and Winter Festival concerts from the previous year, reaching approximately 15,000 listeners throughout the Puget Sound region each night. Portions of concerts are selected for broadcast on NPR's "Performance Today" heard on 300 stations nationwide.
