"Brahms: Romanticism and Restraint"
Adam Stern
Johannes Brahms, one of the greatest of the Romantic composers, was in many ways a study in contradictions. His music is intimate and intense in the extreme, and yet he was a lifelong bachelor, afraid of emotional commitments. His music speaks of an open and giving nature, but Brahms himself was a prickly, difficult character who allowed very few persons to get close to him. This lecture will discuss some of his chamber and piano music, and whether it complimented or belied his personality.
Adam Stern is Music Director of the Seattle Philharmonic and was Associate Conductor of the Seattle Symphony from 1996 to 2001.
