Has lived in Seattle since 1993 and is Professor of Piano at the University
of Washington. A native of Philadelphia and a graduate of both the Curtis
Institute and The Juilliard School, he made his New York debut at the
Metropolitan Museum in 1972 and won the silver medal at the Leeds International
Pianoforte Competition in England six months later. Living in London for
the next twenty years, he established himself as one of the preeminent
pianists of his generation, including frequent appearances on both BBC
Radio and Television, and giving cycles of the complete solo piano works
of Brahms and Bach's Klavierübung in London and other major European
centers. With a repertoire encompassing over sixty concerti and forty
recital programs, he has performed as soloist under conductors such as
Sir Georg Solti, Yehudi Menuhin, James Levine, Leonard Slatkin, Michael
Tilson Thomas, Aaron Copland, and Gerard Schwarz, and the orchestras of
Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle - among others
- as well as all the major orchestras in Great Britain. His solo recital
in Berlin's Philharmonic Hall in 1999 met with great critical acclaim.
More recently, he performed the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas in seven recitals
in Seattle's Meany Theater, recorded live and issued recently on Romeo
Records in New York. He has also recorded on the EMI, Polygram (Philips),
Sony, Chandos and Cirrus labels.
