James Ehnes

Associate Artistic Director, violin


has performed in over 25 countries on five continents, appearing with many of the world's most well-known orchestras and conductors. His 2009-2010 season includes performances in Amsterdam, Berlin, Salzburg, London, Manchester, Glasgow, Tokyo and throughout the US and Canada. Mr. Ehnes's extensive discography of over 20 recordings includes repertoire ranging from Bach violin sonatas to John Adams's Road Movies. His newest release, HOMAGE is a CD/DVD set featuring performances on twelve of the greatest violins and violas ever made, all belonging to the Fulton Collection. His recordings have won many international awards and prizes, including a Grammy, a Grammophon, and five Juno awards. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada in 1976, Mr. Ehnes began violin studies at the age of four, became at nine a protégé of noted Canadian violinist Francis Chaplin, and in 1993 continued his studies with Sally Thomas at The Juilliard School, winning the Peter Mennin Prize upon his graduation in 1997. He has received the Avery Fisher Career Grant, an honorary doctorate from Brandon University, and in 2007 became the youngest person ever elected as a Fellow to the Royal Society of Canada. Mr. Ehnes plays the "Marsick" Stradivarius of 1715 and gratefully acknowledges its extended loan from the Fulton Collection.
